How to Perform a Spring Tune-Up in 5 Steps

Checking oil level on dipstick

As spring approaches in Lexington, you may be looking for some tips on how to spring clean your car. Honda of Columbia would also like to add that it’s probably time for your vehicle to get a tune-up. The harsh weather of winter can really grind down your vehicle’s systems. Read on to learn about how to tune-up your car, what the signs are that your vehicle needs a tune-up, how to clean your vehicle, and more. Then, if you think you need help, explore our service specials and reach out to Honda of Columbia.

1. Visit a Car Wash

When you perform a spring tune-up or a spring clean for your car in Irmo, the first thing you’ll want to do is take your vehicle to the car wash. Freezing temperatures and all the salt from the road can wreak havoc on your paint. Make sure to go for a “Premium” wash to get all the potentially damaging salt out of the nooks and crannies of your vehicle. If you do this yourself, don’t forget to add baking soda to the water to make sure you’re breaking down stubborn salt deposits.

2. Check Your Tires

One of the signs that your car needs a tune-up is that your tire pressure monitor keeps on going off regardless of the fact that you regularly fill your tires with air. Winter can make your tires very fussy when it comes to retaining pressure. To be frank, this may not mean that you’re due for a tire replacement. However, since snow and ice are especially hard on your tires, you need to check your tire tread regardless to make sure they haven’t taken too much of a beating. Examine your tread for signs of excessive wear and make sure to rotate your tires as well so that they wear evenly.

3. Replace Wiper Blades and Fluids

Snow and sleet will beat up your windshield wipers. If your wipers are leaving streaks, it’s time to replace them. These are inexpensive and can be purchased at our parts department in Lexington. If you haven’t topped off your windshield wiper fluid since fall, it’s time to replenish your wiper fluid.

4. Check Your Car Battery

The cold can cause your car battery to run harder and less efficiently. After every winter, it’s important that you get its power levels checked. Many service garages will do this for you for free.

5. Change Your Oil

Wondering how to tune-up your car? Make sure to check your owner’s manual to see what your oil change interval is. You may be due for oil replacement. If all of these items seem like a lot to juggle in your mind, head to Honda of Columbia. We’ll give you a full spring tune-up for an affordable price!
