Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable

Sometimes a check engine light can turn on when there is truly no problem that needs to be addressed. In that case, you can learn how to reset your check engine light manually. If you have never popped the hood for DIY car care, this may seem intimidating, but if you follow these steps, you can reset your check engine light with ease:

  1. Turn off the car and put on safety gloves and glasses.
  2. Locate the negative terminal. You can look for a black cap and a negative (–) symbol to indicate that you have found it.
  3. Using a wrench, loosen the nut on the negative terminal. Pull the negative connector from the battery and keep it aside for 30-60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the negative cable and be sure to tighten it back up with your wrench.

While this method is likely to reset your check engine light, if it doesn’t work, you can try the next tip below. Keep in mind, disconnecting the battery may also reset your infotainment system!

Check Your Gas Cap

A simple explanation of why you can’t reset your check engine light may be due to your gas cap. If your gas cap is loose or cracked, it can release fumes, which can cause your check engine light to come on as a result. Find a safe place to park and fully remove your gas cap and put it back on. If a bad fuel cap is to blame for a stubborn check engine light, this technique should solve it.
