How Long Does An Oil Change Take?

Adding oil to engine

Time is precious around Columbia, but getting quality auto maintenance takes up very little room in your schedule! Just how long does an oil change take? Most service centers take around an hour to get you in and out the door, so you can easily book an appointment during a lunch break. Plus, you can even plan ahead by scheduling your service online!

How Long Does a DIY Oil Change Take?

How long should an oil change take if you do it yourself? That can vary depending on your comfort and expertise with auto issues. While it’s possible to get the job done in an hour, we recommend budgeting for longer than that until you’re fully comfortable with the process. Don’t forget the cost of equipment. You’ll need to invest in new oil, a new oil filter, a new oil filter gasket, a rubber mallet, correctly sized wrenches, a jack, and wheel blocks. Many Irmo customers find that they prefer the ease of scheduling an oil change with our service department instead, but if you’re up for the challenge, head to our parts department for our recommendations on supplies!

What Else Should I Know About Oil Changes?

You know how long an oil change takes and how to do the task yourself, but what else should you know about the oil change process?

  • Frequency: The old rule of thumb said that you should change your oil every 3,000 miles, but new technology has changed everything. Many new vehicles can go between 5,000 to 7,500 miles – or even as much as 10,000 miles! Check your owner’s manual for extra guidelines.
  • Formulas: There are two main motor oil formulas you’ll see: synthetic and conventional. Your owner’s manual will help you determine what you need, but you can also ask our service technicians for advice based on your make and model.
  • Discounts: Want to save some money at the service center? Be sure to keep an eye out for our service specials. We often offer oil change coupons and other discounted services.
