Mechanic Pouring Motor Oil into Funnel

Here at our Lexington service center, we take great pride in serving the needs of our Columbia community. Whether you’re shopping for a new ride or need maintenance guidance, Honda of Columbia is here to help. When that oil change light pops on, you might start to wonder what type of oil is best for your vehicle. Luckily, we can help you compare synthetic oil vs. regular oil and even full synthetic oil vs. synthetic blend to guide you to the right oil grade for your vehicle. Learn more about the differences between oil types with our team below!

What is Conventional (Regular) Oil?

Before we compare synthetic vs. regular oil, let’s go over each oil type. Conventional or “regular” oil is a petroleum-based substance that is a staple of the combustion engine configuration. Regular oil’s primary role is to lubricate the moving parts within your engine to reduce wear and tear. Along with that, oil works hard to prevent overheating.

What is Synthetic Oil?

When you compare synthetic oil vs. regular oil, you’ll notice many similarities. Both are petroleum-based, but synthetic oil provides enhanced lubrication capabilities and is more stable. Another difference you’ll note when looking at synthetic vs. regular oil is that synthetic oil oxidizes less easily and also retains better protective properties. Synthetic oils are developed from petrochemicals to deliver precise properties that make them superior but more expensive. Benefits of using synthetic oil include:

  • Less viscosity at lower temperatures
  • Enhanced ending cleaning properties
  • Ideal for high-performance engines

How Do Full Synthetic Oil vs. Synthetic Blends Differ?

Along with synthetic oils and conventional oils, when you visit the shop for an oil change, you may hear about synthetic blends. Synthetic blends, as the name suggests, are part synthetic oil and part conventional oil blended together. Opting for a synthetic blend allows you to enjoy the cost-savings that come with conventional oil and the enhanced properties of synthetic oils all in one.

Note: While blends are great for many, some vehicles require full synthetic oil for proper performance. If you’re unsure about which oil to use, contact our service team for a consultation!
